Risks of Ultraviolet (UV) light

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can have a range of health risks, including skin cancer, premature aging, and eye damage[1][2][3][4]. UV radiation is classified as a human carcinogen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization[2][3]. Unprotected exposure to UVA and UVB rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, leading to skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)[4]. UV radiation can also suppress proper functioning of the body’s immune system and the skin’s natural defenses[2], as well as cause photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis[5]. Sunscreen and sunglasses can be used to protect against these risks[1].
