UV-based varnish in the printing industry is cured using ultraviolet (UV) light. UV coatings provide a high gloss finish and offer full protection of the printing. The curing process occurs when ink is exposed to UV energy generated by the machine’s UV Mercury lamps. This method offers quick drying and hardening of the coating, as well as improved water resistance and extreme wear and abrasion resistance.
Difference between water-based varnish and UV-based varnish
Water-based varnish and UV-based varnish are two different types of coatings used in printing. Water-based varnish, also known as aqueous coating, is a clear, water-based coating that is environmentally friendly. It is best used on papers with a text weight of 80# or higher. UV-based varnish, also known as ultraviolet coating, is a clear polymer coating that is cured by passing under an ultraviolet light which quickly dries and hardens the varnish. It creates a super high gloss finish and can be used on any paper stock. Aqueous coating is more environmentally friendly than UV coatings due to its water base, while UV coatings are better for creating a super high gloss finish.
